Drooping lower eyelids, excess skin, wrinkles, under-eye bags and circles under the eye will all contribute to the reasons for wanting an eyelid reduction. Many older adults require this procedure and afterwards, they feel and look refreshed and more youthful. The surgery will leave the patient with more definition around their eyes.

A reason that a functional Blepharoplasty or eyelid reduction is needed is that the eyelids become too heavy and start to sag into the field of vision. When a patient makes an appointment to see Dr Shams, she will perform an assessment on the peripheral vision of the patient with a special instrument called the HVF the Humphrey Visual Field analyser.

Eyelid reduction for cosmetic reasons can be done on either the upper or lower lids or if necessary, on both. With the lower lids, it is usually fat that needs to be removed and this is done with a procedure called Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty.

The eyelid reduction surgery leaves no scars as the incision is on the inside of the lower eyelid, once the cut is made the fat can be removed. There is no change to eyesight it is purely cosmetic surgery to look more youthful. When having the initial consultation, it is recommended to bring old photos.

When a patient decides that they want to embark on eyelid reduction they need to understand that it is a cosmetic surgery, and they must be aware of what to expect. These surgeries will enhance features and improve self-confidence they do not significantly change the person's face.

Eyelid reduction surgery is usually a single procedure although there can be complementary surgeries that Dr Pari Shams may suggest that will be suitable for the patient's unique needs.

If Dr Shams can see that it would be beneficial to her patient to include a ptosis surgery which is a droopy eyelid lift, or fillers to correct lower eyelid hollowing which would work well with the scheduled eyelid reduction then the patient has the option of having these procedures done at the same time.
