Blepharoplasty - News On The Latest Research Reconstructive and cosmetic eyelid surgery

What is blepharoplasty and why is it done? It is the kind of treatment that is sometimes necessary to get rid of excess skin around the eyes. On the upper eyelid, sagging skin can age your appearance and block your vision and on the lower lid, it can appear droopy. The layman’s term for blepharoplasty is an eye lift. The purpose of this treatment is to improve your appearance or to open the eye in older people whose sagging upper eyelids start to block their vision. Blepharoplasty will not get rid of dark circles under the eyes, crow feet, or any other facial wrinkles.
Blepharoplasty procedures go along with other cosmetic surgery such as laser resurfacing and forehead lifts. As our skin grows older, it produces less collagen that makes it more prone to the show the effect of gravity, resulting in excess skin that gathers around the eyelids. Another factor that can cause weight on the upper and lower eyelid is when the fat cushion keeping the eyeball safe starts to bulge in the upper and lower eyelids. This cushion is kept in shape by a thin membrane and as we age the membrane thins and the fat pushes into the eyelids.
“Candidates that are prone for blepharoplasty are mostly people over 35 years of age who know what they want to look like. While sagging is also genetic, and you might have it done sooner. It can improve your looks and help build your confidence and self-esteem, without altering your facial structure” says Dr Pari Shams Cosmetic functional eyelid surgent. Eyelid surgery procedures take about 2 hours for both upper and lower lids. Your doctor might not have to inject any painkiller around the eye as the procedure is non-invasive and only causes a mild sense of discomfort. The risks involved in going through the procedure are minimal and include symptoms such as infection and irritated dry eyes.
It is advisable before the eyelid procedure to have a physical examination done to evaluate your tear production and measure parts of the eyelids; another examination necessary before the procedure is testing the peripheral vision. Eye photography is important before the procedure to photograph the eye from a different angle to help with planning and assessing for immediate and long-term effects. Shortly after the treatment, patients sometimes experience blurred vision, light sensitivity, pain or discomfort, watering eyes, and bruising. However, the great majority of people are very satisfied with the results they see.
