Irving, TX, – Researchers are working on a way to lower patient exposure to radiation while still providing all the benefits CT scans deliver in the diagnostic process. The results of a recent study are very promising for the future of ultra-low dose CT scans in diagnosing a number of conditions.

While still being perfected, a new protocol calls for 14 times less radiation than a standard CT scan. A recent test of this protocol’s performance level showed diagnostic abilities that were only slightly diminished versus standard CT scans. In diagnosing fractures, the ultra-low dose scans had a 98 percent accuracy rate. In diagnosing patients without fractures, the test’s accuracy rate was 89 percent.

“CT scans are vital tools for helping doctors diagnose a variety of conditions without having to perform surgery to ‘see’ what is going on inside the body,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “While standard CT scan radiation levels are relatively minor and do very little to increase a person’s cancer risk anything that can be done to lower the risk even more without compromising test quality is very encouraging.”

How soon the protocol, dubbed REDUCTION, might be used on a widespread basis remains unclear. Further study must yet be done to confirm diagnostic accuracy rates. CT scans are vital tools used in diagnosing such concerns as fractures and internal bleeding, among other conditions. While X-rays are commonly used in orthopedic cases, CT scans can often pick up fractures that X-rays simply cannot see. This enhanced look inside the body is what makes these tests so valuable to patients and their doctors.

“While standard CT scans are considered safe and are often very much medically necessary to help doctors determine what is causing patient concerns, the potential to lower exposure even more is very encouraging,” says Dr. Echt.
