PET Scans Improve Alzheimer’s Diagnostics: Study

The founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas talks about the benefits of using PET scans for diagnosis.

Irving, TX, Aug.20, 2017 — It is estimated that some 5.5 million American’s are living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study, however, is shedding light on the possibility that many diagnosed may not actually have this form of dementia. PET scanning technology, the study found, can help doctors more accurately confirm or deny the presence of one of the key diagnostic factors associated with Alzheimer’s: amyloid plaque.

“Amyloid plaque forms on the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “When this plaque is present, Alzheimer’s is a possible diagnosis. A complete absence of it rules out this condition entirely.”

PET scans using a special radioactive tracer enable clinicians to see inside the brain and detect the presence or absence of amyloid plaques. Initial results from an ongoing study were recently released, casting a spotlight on the potential for misdiagnosis. So far, researchers have tested more than 4,000 patients looking for signs of plaque buildup. Researchers found that 54 percent of the patients who had been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairments had plaque show up on their PET scan results. Of those diagnosed with dementia, about 70 percent had plaque.

“The findings are significant in that they show some patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s may actually suffer from other memory disorders,” says Dr. Echt. “When this is the case, the use of Alzheimer’s treatments may be largely ineffective. Since some forms of dementia are treatable, having a more definitive way to diagnosis patients is very important for improving outcomes.”

People who are diagnosed with cognitive impairments or other memory disorders should talk to their doctors about diagnostic procedures. A PET scan, if advised, may lead to more accuracy in diagnosis.
