On October 1, 2023, Sunday, Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders by 34-31.

With the help of a Jake Elliott field goal and a tenacious defense, the Philadelphia Eagles narrowly defeated the Washington Commanders, 34-31, in overtime on Sunday after surviving a scare from a fellow divisional opponent.

With just nearly two minutes left in the game, wide receiver A.J. Brown grabbed the game-winning touchdown, giving the Eagles the appearance that they would win this contest in regulation.

The Washington Commanders were in the middle of their yearly midseason surge, but beating the Philadelphia Eagles, who were unbeaten at the time, accelerated the momentum. Meek Mill, a Philadelphia native, performed his song "Dreams and Nightmares" as the group danced and sang.

“That’s a tough one,” McLaurin said. “I’m still trying to process.” Through this statement, he was referencing about 34-31 overtime loss. With 3:58 left, Eagles kicker Jake Elliott connected on the game-winning 54-yard field goal after a fruitless Washington possession in overtime that featured a contentious no-catch decision teams on a McLaurin target.

The Washington Commanders were involved in this one all the way through. Sam Howell squared off against the reigning NFC conference winners, and the outcome might have been quite different if Terry McLaurin had been given a close-range reception instead of Sam Howell in overtime.

The Commanders were sitting at 2-2, which was obviously the only thing that matters. Although, Howell can look back on this game with great pride as he continues to position himself as the Commanders' long-term potential difference maker behind center.

There are some games coming up for Howell and the Commanders that they can win. All indications point to actual advancement if the signal-caller maintains this level of play because he won't be coming up against teams like the Bills or Philadelphia Eagles too often throughout the season.

After, the completion of the game, Howell said, “I think I did some good things out there,”, “but at the end of the day, we did not win. … I don’t believe in moral victories. … We lost the game, and I feel we should have won.”

Losing in extra time is never easy. But coming into their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears, Howell may take pride in his Week 4 accomplishments thanks to 290 passing yards, zero turnovers, and a strong 98.6 passer rating.
