Irving, TX – When prostate cancer is the diagnosis many men envision a future filled with surgery, radiation treatments and the prospect of living with uncomfortable side effects. While these treatments can and do offer strong results in preserving longevity, they may not be the only option available to some patients.

Active surveillance is recommended only to men who are diagnosed with early stage, low-risk prostate cancer. This subtype of prostate cancer is known to be very slow-growing, which means it generally poses no immediate threat to life. Researchers have found that men diagnosed in this stage are quite often more likely to age and face morbidity from other causes long before prostate cancer poses a true risk. With that in mind, active surveillance enables men to choose a “treatment” path that enables them to avoid potentially serious complications that may arise from surgery and other therapies.

“Active surveillance has been shown to produce survival rates that are as high as more aggressive treatment options in some cases,” Dr. Echt says. “The key to success, however, lies in ensuring that surveillance really does play a role going forward. To gain the most from this option while safeguarding health, it is critical for men and their doctors to follow through on routine monitoring.”

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer should speak with their healthcare providers about all treatment options. Active surveillance is generally only recommended in very low-risk cases.
