It has been almost a decade since the founding of the Lion Rock Institute in 2004, and Hans Mahncke, who joined the organization in its first year, has found fulfillment in his participation in the organization’s battle to retain free market values that benefit residents of Hong Kong and the surrounding area.

“It has been a great pleasure to work alongside so many respected and dedicated individuals at the Lion Rock Institute,” says Hans Mahncke, adding: “The research we do together is based on the idea that informed decisions about economic policy and the law make for good policy decisions at the government level. Our fight has not only been for those who cannot understand or cannot access such complex policy issues, but for people you see in the streets of Hong Kong every day. I am proud to have contributed to such good work.”

Named for the throngs of people who fled to mainland China ‒ to “the Lion Rock” ‒ to avoid conflict and unrest in the mid-twentieth century, the Lion Rock Institute embodies the values of freedom, equality, and community. Today, Hans Mahncke uses his expertise with common law, economic law, and the laws of the World Trade Organization to fight for free market values at home, in Hong Kong. Alongside other experts in laws concerning land ownership, taxation, and government policy, Hans Mahncke uses his impeccable research practices to create changes in public policy. Furthermore, as a university teacher, he utilizes his experiences with the Lion Rock Institute to inform students of the law about the ways law scholars directly improve the lives of others.

Well recognized in the media as an organization that fights for a range of issues surrounding the economic welfare of Hong Kong’s residents, the Lion Rock Institute has made clear its intentions to continue bettering the lives of people throughout the world. While Hans Mahncke is only one member of this organization, his influence on the direction of the organization is well-known and respected.
