Ken Wargo works to improve the town of Delavan, Wisconsin by heading up the local Civil War Monument Restoration Project and leading task forces against cemetery vandalism.

A prominent figure and leader in the community of Delavan, Wisconsin, Ken Wargo has been dedicated to the task of improving the appearance of his town, as well as the respect shown to its history, since 2011. While investigating the possibility of creating a new monument in the city, it was brought to his attention that the existing monument to the impact of the Civil War on the town was badly in need of repair. To combat the growing dilapidation of the monument, he proposed the cleaning and restoration project in 2011, and that same year was elected as the chair of a committee to see that project through.

Since that time the monument has undergone a massive cleaning and serves as a standing reminder to the people of Delavan of the sacrifices their forebears made during the Civil War. Rededicated in 2012, the Delavan Civil War Monument was originally dedicated in 1870 and has withstood harsh weather conditions it its long life. Its unique, star-shaped walkways represent the Grand Army of the Republic and had become extremely fragile. Due to the nature of the damage to the walkway, it became apparent that a full replacement was needed. During this stage of the project, an inscription by the walkway’s original designer, Susan Aram, was found, dating to somewhere between 1870 and 1906 indicating her intentional star-shaped design and the meaning behind it.

The project surpassed its fundraising goal of $20,000, and future plans include further restoration of the marble and repairs to additional areas of the park to preserve and improve its condition. Additional funds are also needed to re-etch inscriptions, polish the marble, and reseal the monument to protect it from future damage and mitigate the need for more repairs.

In addition to this contribution to his community, Ken Wargo, has also led a task force against vandalism in the memorial’s cemetery. This important service will ensure that proper respect will continue to be shown for these fallen soldiers’ memories. Their service is a source of great pride for the City of Delavan and Mr. Wargo will continue to preserve that legacy for generations to come.
