Almost a decade ago, Sloane Pellegrini stepped on the plane to leave her stable upbringing in San Mateo, CA and embark on a life that she knew very little about. Having accepted a one-year contract teaching English as a second language in a South Korean private school, Sloane Pellegrini was ready to take on a new challenge and completely different type of lifestyle than she was ever used to.

A Bachelor’s degree in English was the closest thing to a formal training Sloane Pellegrini ever had for such a position, and she had to present a lesson plan in front of her school masters before the deal was even finalized. There was a lot on the line, seeing as she had already flown over there and put hundreds of dollars and hours into getting all the necessary visa paperwork processed. But Sloane Pellegrini was always an adventurous spirit and willing to take on challenges no matter how familiar she was with them. This was a trait that proved handy in her first gig as an EL teacher, as well as all the other deals she has landed throughout her career.

When it came time to present, she was confident that her PowerPoint presentation would wow her colleagues and superiors. What she didn’t plan on however, was her laptop computer burning out the second she plugged it into one of the school’s power outlets. And for the first of many times in her career of teaching, she had to improvise a lesson plan while still seeking the approval of her bosses.

Even without her compelling visual aids, Sloane Pellegrini passed the test with flying colors. Her wits and personality shone through the presentation, and she was welcomed into the teaching community with applause. Now almost a decade later, Sloane Pellegrini looks back on the first big test of her career, and how the traits of adaptability and keeping calm that she used to pass the test were the very pivotal traits that have carried her throughout the challenges of her career. Now a private ESL instructor, she has earned herself the ease of a specialized career where she displays the utmost of professionalism.
