Moving can be a stressful business, and finding the perfect place to rent can be exhausting. Inevitably, prospective renters overlook small details that can greatly affect their quality of life while living in their new apartment. Here is a list of the most common offenders:
Cell Reception

Depending on the building’s location and layout, cell reception can be lightning fast or incredibly spotty. Factors that can affect cell signal include your location from a cell tower, the building materials used, and of course, physical obstructions from walls, trees, and other buildings. Apartments in the corner of a building, for example, tend to have better reception than apartments in the interior of a building.
The fix: Make sure to test your phone while visiting the apartment – text, call, and data reception.

Environment

Having noisy neighbors is a nightmare situation every city-dweller wants to avoid. However, most never realize the extent of the noise until they actually move into the apartment they have chosen. Not surprising – most open houses and apartment visits occur in the middle of the workday when the neighbors are likely out at work themselves. Noise can also spill into your home from the street outside, as well as smoke, dust, and other pollutants that usually accompany transportation. It might not be a problem when you’re seeing an apartment for the first time, but a month of sleepless nights due to noisy traffic can really wear you down.
The fix: If your schedule allows it, try visiting the apartment building twice – once during work hours, with your real estate agent, and again at night. That should help you gauge the noise level for the time in the day when you – and your neighbors – will actually be at home.
Plumbing
This might sound like a basic requirement, but few renters make it a point to check all the taps, showers, and other water sources during an apartment tour. While weak showers are, at best, an inconvenience, faulty toilets and leaking sinks are another problem entirely.

The fix: Go around all the water sources during the house tour, and check each one individually. If you discover any problems, inform your agent immediately, so they can also inform the proprietor as soon as possible. This way, all water issues will be addressed before you move into your new apartment.

Laundry Services

In some countries, each apartment for rent is expected to come with a washer and dryer set. In others, most buildings are equipped with a common laundry area, with washing machines and dryers provided for all tenants’ use. However, there are also cases where no washing aids are provided, whether at the apartment itself or in the building. For most, doing the laundry is the most annoying chore to do, and it gets more difficult if you don’t have the tools to do it properly.

The fix: If your apartment doesn’t include a washer/dryer, ask the landlord if a common laundry area will be provided. If not, pull up Google Maps, and acquaint yourself with the nearest laundromats and dry cleaning services in the area.Obviously, this one is an issue unique for taller buildings and condominiums. Take the ratio of elevators to # of floors into account – four elevators servicing twenty-five floors may be reasonable, but three small elevators servicing forty floors, with fifty units each, tend to be a recipe for elevator traffic jams during rush hour every morning.

The fix: Aside from counting the number of available elevators during your apartment visit, you can also come back to check elevator traffic in the building’s lobby during the rush hour in the morning or in the evening.
Looking for a new place to live will always be difficult, but being prepared with a checklist for these details, and other similar requirements, will help ensure you have no regrets when it comes to signing that lease contract.
