The FGD systems market by type can be classified as wet, dry, and others (semi-dry) based on the process followed for reduction of sulfur oxides. The Wet FGD systems dominate the overall flue gas desulfurization market due to its high sulfur removal efficiency. They are the most commercially successful flue gas desulfurization systems. It utilizes alkaline sorbents such as lime or limestone, slurry or seawater to scrub the gases in the absorber or spray tower. Sodium-based reagents can also be utilized for scrubbing of gases in these systems, but they are expensive as compared to lime or limestone reagents. The sorbents used in these systems are also cheap and readily available. These systems are usually installed when the sulfur content in the coal is high, usually from 2% to 6%. The retrofitting of these systems can also be done with ease as compared to dry FGD systems. According to experts in the industry, the wet FGD systems are projected to lose their market share to dry systems in the next five years.

Dry FGD systems are generally used in plants where coal with low sulfur content, typically up to 2% is fired. In these systems, lime is typically used as a reagent. These systems are generally installed in utilities of size not more than 500 MW. The operation and maintenance costs of dry FGD are higher than that of wet FGD systems. The demand for Dry FGD systems is expected to grow at a rapid pace as they are cheaper than wet FGDs. Also, the increasing numbers of integrated captive coal-fired power plants in industries are of less capacity, typically less than 300 MW. This trend is particularly prevalent in China, where substantial amount of FGD system installations are observed.
The global FGD system types have different characteristics as per their use and application requirement in various industries. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to dominate this market with its growing demand for FGD systems in different applications. The Asia-Pacific region is estimated to show a rising growth in the next five years. The regions North America and Europe have growth potential but at a slow rate as they are at a matured stage.
The flue gas treatment systems are used in wide range of applications to curb the pollution such as cement manufacturing, chemicals, power generation, iron & steel, and others. The power generation industry is heavily dependent on coal which releases harmful pollutants during combustion. The chemical and cement industry also contribute significantly to the industrial flue gas desulfurization systems and services market.
The report identifies various types of systems for control of sulfur dioxide. The control systems can be classified as Wet FGD, Dry FGD, and Others. The Wet FGD systems are more widely used. The Wet FGD systems are usually used in plants with huge capacity.
