The majority of business executives view environmental sustainability as a costly obligation rather than a future investment.

The Capgemini Research Institute conducted the first iteration of an annual global research study, polling 2,004 executives from 668 large organisations (annual revenues over $1 billion) across 12 countries and key industries, to learn whether businesses are sufficiently serious about the urgent mandate of environmental sustainability and to evaluate their progress over time. While most organisations have made net zero commitments and acknowledge the need for sustainability, a recent report from the Capgemini Research Institute titled "A World in Balance - Why Sustainability Ambition is Not Translating to Action" found that there is still a disconnect between long-term ambition and immediate concrete actions. Only 21% of executives believe that there is a clear business case for implementing sustainability measures, according to the report, which also emphasises how underappreciated or misunderstood it is. Less than half (49%) of respondents have a defined list of initiatives for the next three years, and just over a third (37%) of respondents say their company is redesigning its operating model. However, the sustainability vision is being integrated into remodelled business strategies, and nearly two thirds (64%) of executives say that sustainability is on the agenda of each of the C-suite in their organisation. Smaller businesses (firms with revenues between $1 and $5 billion) invest more overall (on average 2.81%), whereas businesses with revenues over $20 billion invest just 0.41% of their total revenue in sustainability projects. This compares to an average R&D spend of 4% for larger businesses.
