Southlake, TX – Mammograms is a screen test which helps in early detection of breast cancer and had reduced deaths.

Mammograms continue to be one of the most accurate tools we have in the early detection of breast cancer; and with over 200,000 women diagnosed each year, mammography plays an enormous role in making sure those women receive treatment as soon as possible. The American Cancer Society has recently released statistics that show a 34% decrease in breast cancer-related deaths since 1991 - a number that translates to over 200,000 lives saved. These kinds of numbers, says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon of Southlake Oncology, are what encourage women to stay committed to regular breast cancer screenings.

“Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in this country,” says Dr. Echt. “Millions of research dollars are continually spent in working to develop more accurate methods of detection and cure. The mammogram continues to be one of our most accurate - and widely used - detection techniques. Women who undergo regular screenings are in a much better position to identify disease early and go on to live a long and healthy life.”

And yet there are still some women who are not getting their mammograms - a potentially life-saving test - on a regular basis. Most are uninsured women who are not educated about the benefits of such a test. Still, there are very educated - and insured - women who are also not getting their regular mammograms. So it has become the goal of doctors to encourage their patients to commit to regular screenings and to encourage their friends and family members to do the same.

“I am confident that at some point there will be even more accurate, better, and faster methods for detecting breast cancer,” says Dr. Echt. “But right now mammogram is among the very best methods of detection that we have available to us and there is no doubt whatsoever that it saves lives. It is crucial to adopt a lifestyle that includes regular breast cancer screenings.”
