Upstate New York’s leading dog breeders, South Side Dogs and owner Frank Popolizio are now advising dog owners on how to keep dogs safe during the Halloween time. With the loud noises and the masked strangers, Halloween can be a difficult time for confused animals and so this campaign will provide owners with additional information on how to ensure their dog remains safe and protected.

For younger dogs or those with anxiety, any loud noises can trigger an emotional response. It’s for this reason that owners should be prepared to respond to their animal’s needs on Halloween. Owners should be aware that animals take their emotional cues from a person’s face. This means that people in masks can be very scary for a dog. And so on Halloween, when hundreds of children are out going door-to-door in the neighbourhood, owners should keep their pet away from the door and windows. Try to ensure that the dog is in a well-lit room in a basement with its favourite toy until late into the evening when there is little chance of trick-or-treaters coming to the door.

Fireworks can be difficult for dogs to understand as well. And so, as on any major holiday, pet owners should ensure that their dog remains comfortable and in an area of the home where they can be monitored by the family for signs of anxiety. If the dog begins to exhibit signs of anxiety during the night, they should be given access to a favourite toy or taken for a walk in a quieter part of the area. Exercise is often the best solution for an anxious dog, as their energy will be focused on walking rather than the loud noises that might have scared them.

During the days preceding Halloween, owners should prepare a room in their house for their dog to stay away from the loud noises outside. This will make the process easier on the day, should the animal become distressed.
