Kowloon, Hong Kong--RFID tags are used in the RFID systems to identify the objects. These tags contain electronically stored information. There are tags that make use of magnetic fields for power while some that make use of local power source like battery, or in case they don’t have a battery they use of energy emitted from electromagnetic fields. Those tags that are powered by battery have the capability to operate at hundreds of meters while those without a battery need to be within the sight of the reader so that they can be tracked.

RFID tags have uses in many industries like the automobile industry where tags are attached to automobile during production so that its progress through the assembly line can be tracked. There are certain types of RFID tags that can be attached to cash, clothes, private belongings etc.

There are basically three types of tags: active tags, passive tags and battery assisted tags. An active tag comes along-with an on-board battery and it periodically keeps transmitting its ID signal. A passive tag comes without a battery and draws power from a reader. The battery-assisted tag comes with a small battery on-board and in the presence of an RFID reader it gets activated.

UHF label or the ultra-high frequency labels provide a maximum range up to 15 feet. They operate at 433 MHz and have a moderate data speed. Because of this high range, UHF label are used in many tracking applications such as supply chain, inventory and logistics; apparel and other item-level retail; healthcare and pharmaceutical; returnable transport units; embedded applications; manufacturing; and library, media, documents and files.

RFID passive label comes without a battery and therefore it requires that it is illuminated with a power (from a reader) which is almost three times stronger than for single transmission. The reader sends an electromagnetic wave that induces a current in the antenna of the label and energises the circuit in the tag.

The major advantage of these labels is that it works without a battery and have a life of about 20 years, they are less expensive, and they are small in size and have many applications in consumer goods and other areas.

The disadvantages are that they are readable over very short distances thus limiting their application. Even if the product to which the tag is attached has been sold or is no longer tracked, the label remains readable.
