If you recently bought a home with a previously installed panel or your current one does not have the power you require, then you may not have the option. Don’t despair. Buying a brand-new model and having it put in place is much less expensive than you believe.

If you’re in search of a panel to handle more than 100 amp, the cost will increase. If you want to upgrade your current electric breaker panel to 200 amp, the price is between $1200 and $3000. Upgrading to a 400-amp panel, which is the one that many new homes are built with, can cost between $2000 to price to $4000.

In the majority of cases, when upgrading to an electric panel with 400 amp (and in certain cases, a 200-amp panel), you’ll also require an additional subpanel or two. The cost of these subpanels ranges between $500 to $1000.

Permits to perform this kind of work are required. The electrician you hire will be able to obtain the permits you require, usually for a fee between $300 to $400. You can, however, apply for your permit and reduce the cost by $200 to $300. Find out about each electrician who provides you with a bid. Verify that his license is up to the current date and hasn’t received any complaints. Upgrades to an electrical panel are not something you could do.
