For those who themselves or their loved ones have an umbilical hernia, this post can be helpful as it talks about the risk factors and treatment of umbilical hernias.

An umbilical hernia occurs when fatty tissue or part of the bowel thrust through an area near the belly button, pushing through a feeble spot in the enclosing abdominal wall. Although it is common in infants and newborns, it can affect adults too. However, umbilical hernias are easily treatable, they can even become a serious condition on rare occasions. Let’s know some of is aspects.

Risk Factors of Umbilical Hernia

The considerable risk factors for umbilical hernias include:

• Obesity: Adults and children with obesity often face a significantly higher risk of developing an umbilical hernia, compared with individuals of normal weight as per their age and height.
• Multiple Pregnancies: When a woman carries more than one baby as part of her pregnancy, the risk of an umbilical hernia increases.
• Multiple Pregnancies: When a woman carries more than one baby as part of her pregnancy, the risk of an umbilical hernia increases.
• Age: Infants have a higher risk of an umbilical hernia than adults.

Treatment of Umbilical Hernia

Infants & Children: In infants and children, surgery may be requested if the hernia grows after the child is 1 to 2 years old, the bulge is still present by the age of 4 years, the intestines are within the hernial sac, reducing or preventing intestinal movement, or a hernia becomes trapped.

Adults: Umbilical hernia surgery is a small, quick process to push the bulge back into place and to strengthen the abdominal wall. Surgery is usually recommended for adults to avoid potential complications, especially if the hernia grows or starts to hurt.

There are two types of Umbilical Hernia surgery – open and laparoscopic. In open surgery, the surgeon will open the site and repair the hernia by using mesh and stitch the muscle together. In laparoscopic surgery, sutures and mesh will pass through small incisions.
