The NHAI is set to sign the agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation that manages entire Korean highway network from its Traffic Management centre by employing sophisticated audio-video technology.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is taking its efforts to monitor traffic snarl at toll plazas to another level. The NHAI has decided to install video surveillance system for the real-time mapping of congestion at all the major toll plazas to take the quick action to ease traffic flow.

The National Highway Authority of India has planned to install the surveillance system at ten major toll plazas in next six months, and later it will extend the plan to another 200 Toll Plazas that witness daily traffic flow of more than 10,000 vehicles.

The toll plaza video surveillance system will have high-end cameras to ensure the real-time information to the traffic control room at the regional offices (ROs) and NHAI headquarters. The surveillance facility will work around the clock and NHAI has already connected the respective regional offices with high-speed internet network connectivity.

The Chief General Manager (IT and Highway Operations) of NHAI, Mr Akhilesh Srivastava said, “The cameras will keep sending time-stamped photos at regular intervals of 30 minutes to the NHAI’s Command Control Room and regional offices’ Command Room. The moment traffic around the Toll Plazas start queuing up and the queue reaches a marked line set for IP camera, the camera will switch to video mode and start sending videos at regular intervals with alerts as per escalation matrix. If the queue is not cleared in 30 minutes, the matter will be escalated to the regional offices and after one hour to NHAI headquarters.”

The National Highway Authority of India has also signed up with empanelled “drone agencies” for the internet connectivity and drone surveillance, which will ensure the real-time survey of the construction of projects.

The NHAI is also all set to sign the agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation that manages entire Korean highway network from its Traffic Management centre by employing sophisticated audio-video technology. This tie-up will help to bring the best technology for traffic management for Indian highway network.

The NHAI is also all set to sign the agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation that manages entire Korean highway network from its Traffic Management centre by employing sophisticated audio-video technology. This tie-up will help to bring the best technology for traffic management for Indian highway network. An official, who visited the centre with the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Mr Nitin Gadkari last month has informer, “The Centre has 4-View processors that enable the deployed personnel to see over 70 separate images. The personnel can view the entire highway network on the screen, and by simply entering a vehicle registration number in the system they can track the vehicle quickly,” said.

The NHAI is put its best foot forward to ensure that Indian Highway Network sees the massive transformation from all the four directions. These efforts include the technological advancements in the infrastructure, construction of top-notch wayside amenities, hi-end incidence and traffic management system and equal/gender balanced job opportunities for the youth of the country. All these steps, which are taken by the NHAI, will help India to stand at par with the other developed and first world countries in terms of highway development.
