COVID-19 Impact on Household Cleaners in Chemicals and Materials Industry
INTRODUCTION
Household cleaning products play an essential role by safely and effectively removing soils, germs and other contaminants. Household cleaners prevent the spread of infectious diseases and control allergens such as dust and mold, helping us to stay healthy. Surface cleaners, scouring pad, toiler cleaners and others are some of the common type household cleaners. There main purpose is to keep house fresh and clean.
The different types of Household cleaning products are -
Abrasives
Abrasives are materials which wear off dirt by rubbing surface. Rottenstone, whiting, pumice, volcanic ash, quartz, marble, feldspar, and silica are prime examples of an abrasive. Plastic or nylon mesh is the finest abrasive, and the finer an abrasive, the less damage to the surface being cleaned.
Acids
Acids are beneficial in removing hard-water deposits, discoloration from aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper and iron rust stains. Strong acids also eat away clothing, leather, skin and some metals.
Alkalis
Alkalis are soluble salts which are effective in removing dirt without excessive rubbing. They are good grease removers because the alkalis form an emulsion. The particles of alkalis do not separate from the rest of the liquid due to which alkalis are not redeposited on the surface being cleaned. Alkalis readily remove oily dirt.
Bleaches
Chlorine generally is the most common bleach used in household cleaning products. However, new non-chlorine bleaches are becoming more popular, mainly because they are safer to use and store.
Detergents
Some laundry detergents may be used for housecleaning jobs. Detergents loosen dirt and soluble phosphates are added to detergents which help to remove oily dirt.
Home Sanitizers
Sanitizers are chemicals that reduce the number of bacteria and often are used in cleaning bathrooms and washing dishes. Sanitizers also help deodorize surfaces because they kill odor-producing microorganisms.
Spirit Solvents
Most polishes and waxes for wood furniture and floors contain a spirit solvent. Solvents are similar to the fluids used in dry-cleaning processes as products are used to remove oily dirt.
Household cleaning products containing antibacterial cleaners, not only remove dirt and soil, but also can kill the germs which cause illness. Chlorinated cleaning products can help protect against seasonal flu outbreaks and incidence of foodborne illness. Daycare centers, hospitals, restaurants and other public facilities rely upon the disinfectant qualities of chlorine-based cleaners to keep the environment germ-free.
Chemicals used for cleaning and in cleaning products, such as laundry detergents, bleaches, dishwashing products and other household cleaners, help improve cleaning efficiency, making the environment more hygienic. Cleaning solvents are also common household cleaning products. For example, glycol ethers are highly effective as an active component of heavy-duty glass, floor and other hard surface cleaning formulations. Household cleaning products posses high solvency for greases and oils, good water compatibility and good biodegradability.
Restraining factor for household cleaners is according to Environmental Working Group, about 53% of cleaning products contain ingredients that are known to irritate the lungs and 22% of products contain chemicals reported to cause asthma, even in healthy people. Household cleaners involve harmful compounds which can also accumulate on surfaces in the house, creating health risks as members of the household are exposed to them daily. Eventually, these compounds end up getting flushed down drains and deposited into water sources, causing environmental concerns as well..

COVID-19 IMPACT ON GLOBAL HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS MARKET
Rapidly rising COVID-19 cases and the expectation of curbs on movement in the early stage of the pandemic provided a rationale for consumers to build up essential goods stocks as a precautionary measure, for instance, the need to quarantine or significant supply disruptions. Across the world, countries have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with the introduction of restrictions on mobility, travel, and social contact. In the run-up to the adoption of these measures there were widespread reports of people engaging in panic buying, with resulting shortages raising concerns about the sustainability of the food system and people's ability to access the products they need.
Several large industries were on lock down during the COVID-19 due to which the production in the industries has fallen. As a result, increasing demand of household cleaners was not fulfilled by manufacturers. The machines or equipment in the industries are running at 25%-30% of their capacity due to less availability of labor and raw material which are used for the manufacturing of the household cleaning products. The COVID-19 has created the challenge for the manufactures of household cleaning products for the production of the different quality of cleaners which can clean dirt, bacteria and different viruses in the environment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been spending more time than ever at home. For many consumers, "home" has come to mean something entirely different from what it used to be as now home has office, school and gym which require more cleanliness. This increase in activity in the home has led to consumers cleaning their houses more than usual.
Cleaning with a household cleaner that contains soap or detergent reduces the amount of germs on surfaces and decreases risk of infection from surfaces. In most situations, cleaning alone removes most virus particles on surfaces. Disinfection to reduce transmission of COVID-19 at home which increases the demand for home cleaners in pandemic situation.

IMPACT ON DEMAND
The above diagram shows the demand of the household cleaners in Canada. The demand of household cleaners has shown an exponential growth in starting of the year 2020. In month of February, 2020 the demand of household cleaners was 20.00% in the Canadian market which have shown a growth of nearly 165.00% in month of March, 2020. After a month in April 2020, the demand started normalizing but was still showing a growth of 90.00% as compared to February 2020.

IMPACT ON SUPPLY CHAIN
The unprecedented demand for household cleaner products in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic made it an extraordinary year for household cleaners. Shoppers pantry-loaded the products in the early months of the pandemic, making it difficult to find any on store shelves or online. Suppliers and wholesalers have started the hoarding the products which lower the supply of the products and other hand due worldwide lockdown, manufacturers were not able to produce products further
The manufacturers were deprived of the specific amount of raw material which was used in the manufacture of cleaning products. The import and export of the raw material and finished product was on halt which have affected the household cleaner market. This high demand prompted household cleaners manufacturers to adjust their operations, from starting up 24/7 production and focusing on fewer product formats to making major investments in new production lines.

CONCLUSION
On concluding, the spread of COVID-19 pandemic around the globe has hit all the sectors of production. However, with the spread of the COVID-19, the demand for household cleaners has increased. Household cleaners are used for killing of germs, bacteria which grow on different surfaces. Manufacturers also faced the challenges for the production of the household cleaner products during the COVID-19 due to the lock down in various countries.
On account of disruption in supply chain, the manufacturers were not able to fulfil the increasing demand of the household cleaners in the market. Overall COVID-19 has increased the demand for household cleaners and even post pandemic the demand of the household cleaners will increase over the coming years.
