27/04/2016, Hyderabad, India - Muga Silk, also known as the ‘Golden Fibre’ is perhaps the only silk yarn from bred silkworms that is restricted to a region and not found elsewhere, unlike the Mulberry silk and other types, primarily because the Muga Silkworms breed successfully only in climatic conditions like in Assam. One of the three major types of silkworm of indigeneous silks produced in Assam, the other two being white Paat and warm Eri silk, Muga Silk has mesmerized the world with the quality of the silk that is produced to weave fabrics.

Muga silk a product of the silkworm Antheraea assamensis that is limited to a specific region of Assam feeds on certain leaves to produce what results in silk having glossy texture, that is fine and durable. Muga takes dyes like any other silk, with increasing lustre after every wash and has good strength.

The silk industry in Assam is labour intensive and centred in and around Sualkuchi. With around 2.5 lakh inhabitants the major occupation is weaving where even those not familiar with textiles have also taken to this craft. Water is easily available as the Brahmaputra river flows close by.

Traditionally also silk weaving has been an occupation with this place and women are a major workforce for it. Gandhiji had visited this place in 1946 and was astonished to see the skills of the woman force then. He had even said that based on their skills they could even weave dreams from it.

Fine lattices in the weave, self colored checks is a pattern that is almost religiously followed. What is even more attractive is the soft and smooth feeling that one gets just on perceiving the fabric. Zari is a characteristic addition to the border to improve the look.

Sometimes it is replaced by multi colored threads. Patterns like fruits, flowers, diamonds, animals, birds as motifs, accompany the base fabric. Light on the body, with cosy feel and classy look, the Muga silk sarees are very much alluring. These sarees do very well for the classic wedding as for the grand party, the festival look as much as for the social call, corporate office as well as an evening out.
