Madrid, Spain, April 30, 2013 - Despite the economic crisis, Spanish micro enterprises, which account for 75% of the country’s GDP, have not stopped investing in information technology.

According to the ePyme 2012 report, which looks at micro companies’ access to and use of technological tools, businesses of this kind are increasingly equipped with technology, although not to the extent of large companies and SMEs, in which the penetration level is well over 90%. Some 71.3% of micro companies have a computer, 72.4% own mobile phones and 65.2% have Internet access. The overall level of these percentages is brought down by firms in the transport, storage and retail trade sectors.

The report says that, although micro enterprises do not feel it is essential to have a website, they do place importance on social media, with the penetration level among Spanish micro firms standing at over 24%. Similarly, the majority of companies have open code software, above all for Internet browsers and office automation applications.

The study recommends the use of cloud technologies, which represent a very important opportunity, since they provide access to low-cost and affordable advanced technological services. Meanwhile, even though levels of training in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) are high, the study recommends that such training in this field should be further promoted, as well as the use of eGovernment and social networks (which help a company to build and manage its online reputation), as well as use of smartphones, which, among other benefits, help companies with their management and increase their internationalisation opportunities.
