After completing his fellowship program at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Wessam Bou-Assaly joined the Ann Arbor based hospital.

Wessam Bou-Assaly came to the United States in 2004 to complete his post-graduate training at the Indiana University School of Medicine. After finishing two fellowship programs in the last three years, he will join the University of Michigan Health System as an Assistant Professor.

The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) is the academic medical center of the University of Michigan, located in Ann Arbor, the county seat of Washtenaw County. What makes UMHS special is the fact that it is not really a single institution, but rather – as the name suggests – a system that involves several other hospitals, health centers and clinics. The Primary Care and Specialty Care Centers are located throughout Southeast Michigan, including Alpena, Brighton, Chelsea, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Livonia or Northville, among many other locations.

Wessam Bou-Assaly will join a community of more than 26,000 people consisting of medical professionals, staff members, students and even volunteers who help the hospital (and its whole infrastructure) to remain one of the nation’s top health institutions. The patient care at the University of Michigan Health System is top notch and the numbers can confirm that. There are three hospitals, several dozens of outpatient locations and almost 200 clinics. Every year, the home care procedure handles more than 2 million outpatient visits, along with almost 50,000 hospital stays.

The system has its own educational channel where new talent is funneled into each year. The Medical School is highly coveted and generally regarded as among the top 10 in the nation, and their School of Nursing enjoys similarly high rankings each year. The annual research budget is around $0.5 billion, which is, again, one of the nation’s best, allowing the University of Michigan Health System to be among the leading medical forces in the United States.

In his Assistant Professor role, Wessam Bou-Assaly will be responsible for the development and implementation of existing as well as potentially new instructional techniques, the management of student logistics that could lead to improved performance, the creation of career-enhancement plans, and the mentoring of students during their ongoing research projects, including professional guidance and advice.
