4 Ways to Support a Loved One Going Through Drug Rehab

Posted July 2, 2021 by westminsterhousebc

Anyone who goes through drug addiction recovery needs a lot of support. It’s not something that can be done alone. If you have a loved one who is in a BC drug rehab right now, show your support in any way that you can.

Just by letting your presence known, it will already matter a lot.

Here are more ways you can show your support to a loved one going through drug rehab:

1. Educate yourself more about the addiction and the process of recovery.

Open your eyes to the disease and what it entails. Too often, we harbor judgments brought about by a lack of knowledge on the disease. But when you learn more about drug addiction, how it happens, and how recovery goes, you will be able to give grace to the person going through it. Always put yourself in their shoes.
Educating yourself on how the recovery process goes can also help. After your loved one finishes the treatment in a drug rehab in BC and continues it at home, you can help her go through it better.

2. Find new hobbies to love together.

Become an enabler of good things. Encourage your loved one to try new hobbies and join her. You can try something new like taking art classes or learning a new crafting skill. These hobbies give them a new sense of purpose. They have something to look forward to each day.

3. Support the aftercare program.

After finishing the in-house drug rehab treatment at centers like Westminster House, your loved one will still go through an aftercare program. Make sure you support your loved one by ensuring that she attends these classes.

4. Keep your words gentle but sincere.

Be more mindful of your words. Judgmental words from the people closest to them can be more hurtful than the words spoken by other people. If you have concerns, voice them out sincerely but in a gentle manner. That way, you can help your loved one avoid a relapse.

Finding a good drug rehab program is also important. Once your loved one has decided to get treatment, help her find a facility that matches her needs. You should try looking for a treatment center that uses the tried and tested protocols and methods.

Tour the facility together and let your loved one know that no matter what happens, she will always have a home to come back to.
