What is Mudakkathan?

We can easily recognize Mudakathan with its leaves arranged alternatively and obviously with attractive balloon fruits. Children used to play with this fruit by bursting it as they heard a cracker sound by doing so.

 
Mudakathan is derived from two Tamil words (Mudaku – which means Rheumatism) to sum up (Aruthan- which means to eradicate). Mudakathan is a single word combined with two words. Other names include Mudar Kuttran, Mudakatran, Mudakkotran, MudakkuTheerthan and Uminjai. Mudakathan comes under the creeper plant category.

The plant is known as "The Balloon Vine Creeper" or "Love in a Puff." Scientifically identified as Cardiospermum halicacabum. This herb is a beneficial medicine for curing Rheumatism.
