Will Houghton of Ashburnham had years of successful EMT training. After earning a certification to become a wilderness emergency medical technician, it was time to combine his newly acquired skills with his lifelong passion of educating people.

Will Houghton of Ashburnham was asked to take on the director role at Mountain Medicine Education, Inc., a company that provides educational and training services to a diverse clientele that includes EMT personnel, keen to learn about the role of a wilderness emergency technician. Will Houghton of Ashburnham was a natural fit for the role of the director, combining the necessary EMT expertise – along with a wilderness EMT certification - and the innate talent of a highly qualified, professional educator who has had various teaching roles throughout the years.

Will Houghton Ashburnham earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in 1979, graduating Magma Cum Laude. He attended Smith College in Northampton in the next two years, earning a Masters of Education degree that allowed him to pursue his lifelong dream of teaching. He had various teaching jobs in prominent institutions after that, including Harding Junior High School and Stowe School where he taught science and math. In addition to his impressive skills as a teacher, Will Houghton of Ashburnham is also an experienced EMT professional who knows and understands the dangers of the wilderness.

It is an entirely different experience compared to the urban areas, and that is the main reason why even highly qualified and experienced emergency medical technicians are interested in hearing about Mountain Medicine Education. The organization was founded in 1978 by a group of healthcare professionals who witnessed just how hard it is to provide quality services in an entirely different, and often extremely cruel environment. In their mission statement, the founders declared their desire to promote safety in the mountain regions, and teach a combination of specified EMT skills that any professional emergency technician can rely on in the rural environment.

The organization was ahead of its time, predating various other wilderness medicine and first aid services that copied the blueprint of Mountain Medicine. In the last 35 years, the organization has carried on its traditions, regularly implementing the newest guidelines and inviting high quality professionals.

Will Houghton of Ashburnham is confident that he will be a valuable addition to the team, and his unique combination of teaching and wilderness EMT skills will help him in making the service even more efficient.
