The Everest Three Passes Trek is a challenging and rewarding high-altitude trek in Nepal's Everest (Khumbu) region, specifically within Sagarmatha National Park.

Everest Three Passes  is renowned for taking trekkers across three major high-altitude passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, offering unparalleled views of some of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

This trek is considered more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek and is best suited for experienced hikers with a good level of physical fitness. The total distance is approximately 166 kilometers (103 miles), with a cumulative elevation gain of about 11,000 meters (36,000 feet).

Main Three Passes and Peaks

The three main passes are:

Kongma La Pass: At approximately 5,535 meters (18,159 feet), it is generally considered the most difficult and longest of the three passes. It often involves crossing a glacier. Cho La Pass: Standing at around 5,420 meters (17,782 feet), this pass also requires crossing a glacier, for which microspikes can be helpful. Renjo La Pass: The lowest of the three at approximately 5,360 meters (17,560 feet), it is often considered the easiest, though conditions can vary.

In addition to the passes, the trek often includes ascents of several peaks for panoramic views:

Gokyo Ri: Approximately 5,483 meters (17,989 feet). Kala Patthar: Approximately 5,555 meters (18,225 feet), offering iconic views of Mount Everest. Chukhung Ri: Approximately 5,550 meters (18,209 feet).

Route and Duration

The trek typically forms a lollipop loop, with various starting points and directions.

Starting Points: The most common starting point is Lukla, accessed by a short flight from Kathmandu or Manthali. Alternatively, trekkers can start further down the mountains at Jiri, Shivalaya, Salleri, or Phaplu, which offers a more authentic experience and avoids the Lukla flight. Direction: Trekkers can choose to go clockwise or counter-clockwise from Namche Bazaar. Counter-clockwise is often recommended for better acclimatization, while clockwise may offer quieter trails and different views. Duration: The trek typically takes 19 days to complete, depending on the chosen itinerary, starting point, and acclimatization schedule. Some experienced trekkers have completed it in as little as 10 days by utilizing helicopter transfers.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation along the Three Passes Trek is primarily in tea houses (lodges), which offer basic facilities, hot meals, and sometimes amenities like hot showers and electricity for a fee. Camping is generally unnecessary. Food options are varied, with local Nepali dishes like Dal Bhat (lentil soup and rice) being a staple, often with free refills. It is advisable to carry cash as credit cards are rarely accepted outside of larger towns like Namche Bazaar. Drinking tap water is not recommended; trekkers should purify water or buy bottled water, though the latter contributes to environmental waste.

Best Time to Everest Three Passes Trek

The most popular seasons for the Three Passes Trek are:

Autumn (September to November): Offers clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility, though trails can be busy. Spring (March to May): Features mild weather, blooming rhododendrons, and fewer crowds than autumn, but is also peak season for Everest climbers. Winter (December to February): Generally has limited crowds and clear skies but is very cold, with icy trails and potential heavy snow at higher altitudes. Summer (June to August): Monsoon season, characterized by heavy rain, muddy trails, and limited views, making it less ideal for trekking.

Permits and Guides

Permits: Required permits include the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality Permit. A TIMS card is also needed. These can typically be acquired along the trail after Lukla. Guides: While the Three Passes Trek can be done independently by experienced trekkers, hiring a guide is highly recommended for navigation, safety, cultural insights, and assistance with logistics like securing accommodations. Recent regulations have caused some confusion regarding mandatory guides, but solo trekking has generally remained possible. Porters can also be hired to carry luggage.

Safety and Preparation

Altitude sickness is a significant concern due to the high elevations. Proper acclimatization, including rest days and gradual ascents, is crucial . Trekkers should carry a paper map and compass, and consider using GPS apps for navigation. Essential gear includes layered clothing, waterproof and windproof jackets, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and water purification methods. It is also advisable to carry a basic first-aid kit and personal medications. Travel insurance that covers emergency high-altitude rescue and evacuation is mandatory
