Meet Elizabeth and Daniel Jordan: Two Authors on a Mission!

Life has its ups and downs, and no one knows that better than Daniel Jordan.  A retired Navy Medic and chef who enjoys writing poetry and singing, he is also the recipient of an award from President Regan for saving two children from a burning building while working as a lifeguard.

But his life was changed forever when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

His wife, Elizabeth, an award winning photographer, author, cancer survivor and volunteer at big cat sanctuaries, knew they were both about to embark on a new journey.

“There were so many unknowns,” she said. “We had no idea what procedures and tests would be completed, or even how the prostate biopsy would be conducted. Honestly, it was a roller coaster ride of emotions.”

Throughout the journey, they both kept journals and poured out their hearts about the experiences.  “We were in the dark as to what we should expect,” Elizabeth shared.  “We speak of feelings, like we’ve been kicked in the head hearing the word ‘cancer’ for the first time, dealing with the tests, treatments and even sharing the news with family members.”

Before long, their first book together would be published: Empower Your Journey: A Prostate Cancer Guidebook. “This is a book that every person with a prostate and every partner should own,” she said. “The readers will discover the aspects of prostate cancer the doctors do not tell their patients.”

As an author, Elizabeth knew she wanted to write a true guidebook on what really takes place after the initial diagnosis.  “My husband wrote a raw and honest letter in the book about the things he said while going through cancer. He had no idea he was showing signs of grief, and our hope is that readers will be able to develop their own coping strategies to make their own cancer journey a little easier and less stressful.”

Her first book, Paws & Purrs, was written to teach grammar school children what they can do to protect and save big cats from extinction.  Her second book, The Darkness of My Shattered Heart, is a very emotional one that includes dealing with death at a young age and how she continues to lose those she loves.

“I decided I had been through so much in my own life that maybe I could help others going through similar experiences,” she shared. “I wrote about going through a surgery that took a half a dozen other surgeries to correct the first surgeon’s mistakes, losing my parents three weeks apart and other tragedies. So many people cried reading that book, and it showed me the great power of the written word.”

Like most authors, Elizabeth enjoys getting feedback from readers.  “I love it when a reader tells me they are going to have their PSA numbers checked, or it helped them understand prostate cancer a little easier.  I had a review from a woman whose son was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 32. She told me she found the book online and gave it to her son to read. It helped him and really eased his mind.  That was an amazing feeling, to help their family.”

Elizabeth also has a blog, Empowering Men Daily, which covers men’s health, prostate cancer and more info about the book. The blog can be found at Empowering Men Daily – Prostate Cancer, men's health, men and cancer.
