The Boynes Emerging Artist Award, an international, artist-run art competition created to support, promote, and connect emerging artists worldwide, announced the winners of the 6th Edition on June 27. Emerging artists from all around the world submitted their 2D and 3D artwork for a chance to win prizes including a 3 month-fully funded residency in Sardinia, Italy, cash prizes, social media and digital marketing, and publication. The three winning artists were chosen based on their exceptional array of originality, technique, composition and impact. Trinbagonian photographer Gabriella Wyke placed 1st, followed by Canadian artist, Bryan Chadwick in 2nd and British artist, Anne Moses in 3rd.
As the 1st Place Winner in this edition, Gabriella Wyke has won a fully-funded opportunity to carry out her artistic pursuits for 3 months in 2023 in Sardinia, Italy with the artist residency and 6th Edition partner, NoceFresca as well as marketing and publication. NoceFresca is an incubator specifically designed with artists, designers and creative professionals in mind which will provide her with the time and support to continue to focus on her photographic projects that give women a platform to share the changes they would like to see in their communities regarding social injustices such as gender-based violence. Currently, Wkye is documenting the alarming surge of violent acts against women in Trinidad and Tobago that she has personally witnessed in her generation and creates a platform to incite more conversations on gender-based violence with hopes of sparking a change in society. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) graduate has pioneered projects such as Her Voice in which she photographed over 50 women of all ages and backgrounds, getting their views on the events pertaining to gender-based violence transpiring in Trinidad and Tobago. The residency she will be attending features the rural villages of Sardinia island as a space for research and creative experimentation, involving both participants and local communities in a cultural exchange experience. Wyke will have access to curatorial assistance, accommodation, art equipment and gear, planned workshops & artist-guided training activities, publication of their artist profile in the Nocefresca online archive, events to showcase work and insurance coverage for work carried out in the studio.
Bryan Chadwick, Montreal-born, New York-based multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, installation, film/video, music composition, photography and literature and the 2nd Place Winner, will receive $1,000 USD Cash, Published Interview, Social Media Marketing, digital marketing, Winner Certificate, and a Permanent Place on the Boynes Emerging Artist Award Website. Chadwick’s work is his own personal attempt to understand, codify, and express his mental health, exploring the concepts of mental illness, giftedness, creativity and spirituality. His winning work “Starry Night Geode” in particular focuses on a combination of Van Gogh’s and Chadwick’s styles compiled into a multimedia construction for floor or pedestal.
3rd Place Winner, Anne Moses will be awarded $500 USD Cash, Published Interview, Social Media Marketing, Digital Marketing, Winner Certificate and a Permanent Place on our Website. Anne’s work deals with the fragments of life seen at close range - the
portrayal of the elusive touch or feeling; the detail and minutiae of life; introspection.
These ‘moments’ are translated into paintings: combining modern and traditional working methods is a defining element of her work, referencing both contemporary and historical sources. Anne earned her place as a winner in the 6th Edition with her winning work “Closed” which hopes to capture the essence of flesh and provide an “eyescape”.
The Boynes Emerging Artist Award is excited to announce that submissions for the 7th Edition will be opening on 1st August 2022 with more information being announced on 10th July 2022 on their website www.boynesartistaward.com.
