SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the issue of environmental claims in clothing and textiles, the introduction of the EU Digital Product Passport and solutions.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a Consumer Compact article looking at the issues surrounding environmental claims in clothing and the implications of the European Union’s new Digital Product Passport.

An EU report from 2020 described 53.3% of environmental product claims as “vague, misleading or unfounded”, and found 40% were unsubstantiated by verifiable evidence. To empower consumers to make better purchasing decisions, the EU is introducing several regulatory changes, including the introduction of a Digital Product Passport. This will cover environmental factors such as durability, repairability, recyclability, recycled content, greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption.

SGS’s Consumer Compact article looks at the challenges businesses will face with the introduction of the EU Digital Product Passport and introduces a solution that will help create a seamless transition.
