SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a Consumer Compact article looking at the issues of cybersecurity in Industry 4.0 and the importance of adopting the IEC 62443 series of standards.

The integration of smart technology into energy systems, processes, factories, urban infrastructure and transport systems is designed to improve efficiency, sustainability and interoperability. However, there is a downside, it also makes these systems more vulnerable to cyberattack.

There are now several drivers impacting industry in terms of dealing with cyberattacks. Firstly, business continuity. Secondly, an evolving regulatory landscape with legislation such as the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED), NIS2 Directive, Cyber Security Act and Cyber Resilience Act in the EU and NIST 8425.
