If you've failed a DOT-regulated drug or alcohol test, you're likely asking: How long does it take to complete the DOT SAP Program?
The answer depends on several personal and procedural factors, but the average timeframe ranges from 30 to 90 days.
⏳ What Affects the Length of the SAP Program?
The DOT SAP Program, required under 49 CFR Part 40, includes multiple steps:
Initial SAP Evaluation – You meet with a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional who assesses your situation and recommends a treatment or education plan.
Treatment or Education Completion – You must follow the SAP’s recommendations, which could take a few weeks to several months depending on the severity of the case.
Follow-Up SAP Evaluation – Once you complete the program, you return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation to confirm compliance.
Return-to-Duty (RTD) Testing – After the SAP gives clearance, you take a DOT-observed drug and/or alcohol test. A negative result is required to return to work.
Follow-Up Testing Plan – Once you’re back on duty, you’ll undergo at least 6 unannounced tests in the first 12 months.
"Our goal is to help clients complete the SAP process as efficiently and compliantly as possible," says a licensed SAP from AACS Counseling. "We offer same-day evaluations and support every step of the way."
