Good oral hygiene is not just important for strong, healthy teeth, but also for great overall health.

As a dentist who’s dealt with hundreds of patients for more than 30 years, Dr. Behnam Rostami knows the importance of good oral health. While proper brushing and regular visits to a dentist can help achieve that, it’s important to note that good oral hygiene also helps overall health.

Taking proper care of teeth prevents the buildup of bacteria in the mouth. When allowed to build up, bacteria can weaken the gums and make it easier to develop an infection. Such an infection is a doorway to inflammation of the gums, which if not treated in time, can lead to more serious dental issues.

Periodontal disease

The main cause of periodontal disease is plaque buildup that eventually reaches the gum. Periodontal disease can be early stage (inflammation of the gum) to late stage (tooth and gum damage). Advanced periodontal disease can lead to teeth falling out, and the presence of bacteria and other debris beneath the gum line can trigger the release of certain chemicals that fasten the tooth loss problem.

When periodontal disease is left untreated, the bacteria can make its way into the blood stream and cause health problems. The bacteria, along with the immune system’s response to its presence, can circulate through the body and aid the development of diseases such as stroke, diabetes and heart disease. In fact, many cases of heart disease have also shown the presence of periodontal disease.

The inflammation of the gums can cause blood vessels to be inflamed as well. When blood vessels are in such a condition, proper blood flow is restricted. High blood pressure is often the result, which can cause damage to the walls of arteries and the heart.

It’s also been noted that periodontitis can also negatively impact the body’s blood sugar control mechanisms. Inflammation compromises the body’s ability to use insulin, which is the hormone responsible for turning sugar into energy. However, dealing with one condition can help control the other.

In his 30 years of service, Dr. Behnam Rostami has focused on helping patients achieve good dental health.
