George Landegger is a philanthropist who has been working to relieve poverty, improve education outcomes for disadvantaged youth, and provide shelter for victims of relief. As a founding donor for the AmeriKids camp system, he helped create a place where inner city kids who have been affected by the HIV virus or sickle cell disease can experience the outdoors in a structured environment. Camp AmeriKids was founded in 1995 by Robert C. Macauley in the hope that this underserved population would experience the carefree joy of childhood while receiving comprehensive medical care.

Campers ages 8-16 at Camp AmeriKids participate in one of two seven-day sessions in late June and early August. They get to experience a wide array of camping activities including boating, swimming, team building, sports, drama, dance, African drums, spoken word/poetry, singing, and arts and crafts. They get the full camp experience without having to worry about their medical needs not being taken care of because the camp has a full staff of trained nurses and nurse practitioners.

George Landegger has been an active member of the Camp AmeriKids community since its inception. Not only has he contributed monetarily to support its continued existence, he has also given freely of his time and intellectual resources. He believes so strongly in the importance of this organization that his family has only jumped on board. His daughter, Justine Landegger, is currently serving on the Camp AmeriKids board of directors. The joy that these camps provide for the children is immeasurable and George Landegger has been an integral part of it since the beginning.

Camp AmeriKids is just one of the many ways in which George Landegger gives back to his community. In addition to being the chairman of the Alabama Higher Education committee, he has also worked to end hunger in the Florida panhandle and established schools and hospitals in impoverished nations such as India, El Salvador, and Haiti. His continuing charitable work in America and abroad help ensure that all people can have a life free from hardship, regardless of background or life circumstance.
