Washington-born George Spillmann served as a US Army Ranger for a number of years before becoming a business leader. Here he looks back on what he learned during that time.

Though he is now an experienced business leader who moved to California from Washington so he could start his first company, George Spillmann spent his early career as a US Army Ranger. He served his country with passion and distinction, earning a Carnegie Medal in the process. “The Rangers taught me many skills that I have been able to apply in life outside of the military,” he says. Spillmann put everything that he had into his work as a Ranger and now reflects on the many skills that he developed during this time.

From the moment he started training, Spillmann recognized that it would take great determination to achieve his goal. While the physical challenges of training were immense, it was the mental strain that Ranger school took on him that proved to be the biggest hurdle that he needed to leap. When things started to get on top of him, he would remind himself of why he had chosen to join the Rangers in the first place. This motivated him to keep pushing where others might have quit and is a trait that he has taken into his corporate life.

George Spillmann Washingtonalso learned an enormous amount about the importance of teamwork during his time in the military. He took his duty to protect his comrades seriously at all times and understood that everybody around him did the same, which is why they were able to achieve what they did. Again, he has been able to apply this to his business career, with his focus being placed on creating harmonious workplaces that encourage bonding and teamwork at all times.

Furthermore, George Spillmann developed an even greater understanding of the importance of physical fitness. As a young man in Washington he had worked hard to maintain high levels of fitness, but his training at Ranger school pushed him to levels he didn’t think were possible. While this often exhausted him and his fellow trainees, it also allowed him to reap the benefits when he found himself in combat situations. Today, he maintains his fitness levels because doing so allows him to approach his work with energy and enthusiasm.
