For Millions of Families, Homeschooling Has Become a Haven

Homeschool programs have become a haven for many families for educating their children, whether temporarily or permanently.

Remember how, back in 2020, we all assumed that a shutdown of our schools and businesses would be temporary—a few weeks at most? Many of us now feel as if we're going through 2020 all over again, almost two years later. COVID-19 numbers have increased in some areas due to the Omicron variant, reaching peaks higher than any seen in 2020. The variant is highly contagious, putting a strain on testing centres and medical facilities, and new variants are constantly emerging. COVID restrictions and protocols you had previously relaxed have now been reinstated in many parts of the country.

Families with school-aged children are experiencing the same, if not worsening, school-related uncertainties. Homeschool programs have become a haven for many families for educating their children, whether temporarily or permanently.

Concerns are growing:
Families are still concerned about the country's social and political climate and how it affects school safety, including bullying. Some families are still dissatisfied with the school curriculum options. And, believe us when we say that this wave of insecurity is wreaking havoc on educators and families. Here are some of the reasons:

• Consistency: Virtually all schools switched to remote learning during the 2020 pandemic shutdown. The approach to keeping families and educators safe was fairly consistent. Most schools offered hybrid or remote options for parents concerned about sending their children to school in person the following school year. As a result, most schools started in person, and some schools decided to switch to online learning or postpone reopening until after the holidays.

• Options: Following the initial closures, many schools offered in-person, hybrid, or remote learning options throughout the year. On the other hand, families were frequently left with no options this school year. Despite the uncertainty of their futures, many public and private schools only offered in-person instruction. Families that were uncomfortable sending their children to traditional schools were forced to consider online school or homeschooling.

• Emotional difficulties at school: What's worse, our children's mental health and social-emotional well-being deteriorate. They've returned to school with more anxiety, fewer social skills, and a greater number of behavioural issues. They are aware of the extent of their lost and disjointed learning, as well as their concerns for their health and safety. They are aware of what is going on in the world and this country, and they share our sense of powerlessness.

Homeschooling as a haven:

We thought we would be in a better place two years later, but schooling has become even more difficult in some ways. Schools, parents, teachers, and children have all been impacted by the lack of progress, with children suffering the most. Thus, more and more families are turning to homeschool programs as a temporary—or even permanent—solution to the current challenges.

ICEducation has been a valuable resource for these families as they work to prevent learning loss or bring their children up to grade level. It has given families the ability to reclaim control over when, where, and how their children learn while schools try to figure it all out. We've been providing consistency for those who have chosen to online school, as well as a resource for families looking for an afterschool supplement to supplement their child's learning.
