To be dated: Charlie Mon dabbled in children’s books before moving to urban fiction. His foray into an adult genre that’s as far from children’s books as can be was encouraged by J-Dee Cooper, a friend and member of the hip hop band Da Lench Mob, who also provided a foreword for his first adult book, Never Imagined.

The first book in a four-book series of the same name, Never Imagined, depicts the lives of four individuals, Michael, Drevon, Vernon, and Charles, from Nevada to California. Detailing the harsh reality of life on the streets, this book tells it like it is, using the African American Vernacular, profanity, and words commonly used in pop culture.

“I don’t think some fancy dictionary would look too kindly upon words that don’t even follow phonotactics,” said Mon, discussing his writing style. “But that’s how we talk. Urban fiction gives our English variety a platform. Although mostly self-published, we’re at least getting our voice heard. Having said that, language isn’t the only unique theme I’ve explored in Never Imagined.”

Here are some of the themes prevalent in Charlie Mon’s Never Imagined.

1.Ebonics: Ebonics may not be exclusive to urban fiction, but they are a defining feature of the genre. There are several instances of Ebonics in the book, including but not limited to using ‘was’ instead of ‘were’ for plural subjects.
2.Lurid Sex: Never Imagined has its fair share of lurid descriptions where sex acts are concerned. Examples include using crass terms for intimate parts and describing sex between two or more people.
3.Violence: Violence isn’t new to urban fiction, and this book is no exception. While it’s held nothing back where shooting someone dead is concerned, there are also allusions to a massacre.

Although Never Imagined isn’t suitable for younger audiences, it does end on a hopeful note for older readers.

Charlie Mon is currently busy writing the second book in the series, Never Imagined II: Yin and Yang, and working on a new novel whose details he’ll soon disclose.
