Brazilian Game Pajeú Encantado Teaches Kids to Preserve Culture and the Environment

Created by Jefferson Sousa, "Pajeú Encantado" is a free educational game adopted by Recife’s public schools to teach culture and sustainability.

“Pajeú Encantado” is an innovative educational video game created by Brazilian journalist, documentarian and historiographic activist Jefferson Sousa. The game immerses players in the oral traditions, folklore and ecological values of the Pajeú region in Northeastern Brazil.

Designed for children and young students, the game is a free public educational tool used by Recife’s entire municipal school network — reaching over 500 simultaneous players in classrooms. Recife is the capital of Pernambuco, a city of more than 1.6 million inhabitants.

Through narrative gameplay, “Pajeú Encantado” teaches players about ancestral wisdom, biodiversity, and the importance of preserving both cultural memory and the environment. The game is also a response to the challenges of cultural erosion and environmental neglect, especially in vulnerable communities.

Jefferson Sousa, who is also known for his award-winning documentaries and podcast "Sertão Sem Nó", developed the game as part of his mission to integrate local heritage with educational innovation.

“The future of our communities depends on how well we value and protect our history and our natural surroundings,” says Sousa. “This game is a way to help children become guardians of both.”

The initiative highlights how digital tools can be powerful allies in education and sustainable development — especially when rooted in local culture.
