Domestic crime continues to remain persistent for Rhode Island criminal defense lawyers in 2024.

The average crime rate is dropping in Rhode Island, while domestic violence remains an ongoing problem for the state. Over thirty two percent of women and twenty five percent of men in Rhode Island have experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives. Every year, these victims and survivors seek the assistance of domestic violence agencies throughout the state.

As a result, domestic violence crimes makes up a large part of arrests and court cases. It is a prevalent offense among those that have been incarcerated. This type of crime uses up a high volume of resources, both in state and community based responses. At the same time, it is important to bear in mind that in some cases, the defendant is actually the innocent party, resulting in a high demand for Rhode Island criminal defense lawyers.

A survey conducted by the National Intimate Partner Violence Survey, carried out from 2010 to 2012, showed that one in three women and one in four men in Rhode Island have experienced some form of domestic violence at some point in their lives. Self reported domestic violence has not been measured in more than a decade. Recent data showed that domestic violence incidents have increased over the past few years.

There is not sufficient data on demographics who experience domestic violence. This includes race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, immigration status, sexual orientation or disability, though the data does suggest that those from low income, mixed race, African American, American Indian and Alaskan Natives are at a higher risk of domestic abuse compared to other races.

John Grasso said “Those that experience domestic violence, experience different things. Around eighteen percent of women experience sexual victimization and ten percent experience stalking. Human trafficking is also a serious concern that includes domestic and sexual violence. At the same time children that experience domestic abuse also report that they have been maltreated.”

John Grasso, went on to say “Anyone convicted of Domestic Violence in Rhode Island could find themselves spending up to one year in jail with a fine of up to $1,000. This includes attending a mandatory batterers intervention program. Convictions are often also made public.”
