Ties could actually be described as a piece of cloth that has been sewn on the sides so a person can wear it around their neck. The shirt collar is popped up so the men’s ties can be wrapped around it and then a knot is made for holding it in place. This type of tie is worn by men and boys of all ages. It can be worn for going to work at the office, at a restaurant by the waiters, or even could be part of a school uniform. The garment used to be worn with the shirt buttoned all the way up but, over the years it is not uncommon to see a button or two undone with the tie in place.

Men’s ties date all the way back to 1618 and the French. It was just the men who would wear a small neckerchief around their neck that was knotted. This simple little piece of material started a craze in fashion throughout Europe and soon was not just limited to men but women were seen wearing ties too. Eventually the garment would become known as cravat. In the 17th century things were taken a little farther and there was lace added to the cravat. The cravat was big and once placed around the neck it would take some patience and time in order to tie it correctly.

Almost 100 years later in 1715 ties got another new look along with a new name. The stock became the new craze and was made with material called muslin. This material would be carefully folded until it was a narrow band which would then be wrapped around the shirt collar a couple of times and secured under the man’s hair in the back. It was all held together by a pin and everything would tuck securely in a silk bag that was black. Men’s ties went a step farther and created the solitaire. There were ribbons that were stitched around the edges of the silk bag and these would be brought forward and tied to form a big bow in front.

During the 1800’s the garment became so popular that there was questions about how to tie it properly. To help people out the first publication was available that showed the proper way for tying 14 different kinds of cravats. This was also the first instance where the name ‘ties’ originated and was first used. For adding some color to the white cravat the black stock started showing up. These men’s ties were very popular until 1850 when the scarf made its appearance. The scarf was easily held in place with what was called a scarf ring. This eliminated the tying altogether.

With all the rage and hype surrounding men’s ties it was the year 1856 which was truly happening and would be one to remember. This is when the tie that is still worn by men today was created. It was designed in such a way that not only would it last all day but, was comfortable to wear as well. There were many ways of knotting the ties including just crossing the flaps and using pins to secure them to the chest. Courtesy of its convenience, panache and ease of maintenance, this style endured through generations and is representative of the universal method of wearing this accessory even today.

The end of WWI witnessed a new twist in the men’s ties. The fronts were actually painted and were as wide as 4 ˝ inches. These were a huge hit until 1950. Then there were stripes added on the ties. While Britain had been using the stripes as patterns since 1880 and had their own style of doing it, other countries soon followed the suit, the only difference being the opposite direction of stripes so as to avoid confusion. This is how this stylish accessory got its decorations and designs as we know it today.

Few accessories could pass of as being both formal and informal and ties http://www.savilerowco.com/products/men/mens-ties are one of them. But it is not always that men's ties http://www.savilerowco.com/products/men/mens-ties were like this and they have evolved over generations to acquire this present appearance.
