Vancouver, CA - : The WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations cover legal obligations and directives for workplace safety as they pertain to employees. Section 6 of this handbook contains regulations for when a worker is exposed to potentially harmful levels of asbestos fibre, including a workplace that deals in asbestos-containing materials. Metro Safety Training in Canada provides two-part training sessions to workers who enter areas with asbestos, lead, and silica.
Metro Safety Training is a Canadian Red Cross training partner that offers workplace safety courses and emergency first aid classes for first responders and employees in the construction and manufacturing industries.
Established in 2008, the company offers forklift, confined space, and fall protection training certifications as per OHS regulations for workers in the industry. In their Asbestos/Lead/Silica Awareness class, students learn to develop and implement an exposure control plan for asbestos, make an inventory of all asbestos-containing materials and conduct a risk assessment for workplaces with lethal levels of asbestos, silica, or lead.
In a statement about the course, a company spokesperson said, “Workplaces and construction sites contain many products with asbestos content that put workers at increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer.
While OHS has progressively reduced permissible asbestos products in the workplace, a degree of risk remains in certain occupations. Therefore, the WorkSafeBC regulations by OHS require workers to seek training and certification for handling supplies and equipment with asbestos concentrations.”
We offer a two-part Asbestos/Lead/Silica Awareness course in compliance with the WorkSafeBC Regulation 6. Our trainers have designed the theoretical portion with ten modules, including industry-related policies, types of asbestos, developing control plans, administrative and engineered controls, disposal techniques, etc. The course’s practical component includes hands-on familiarization with the equipment and completion of tasks in or around the mock-up station.”
All enrolled students must clear the test, which consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. Successful candidates will receive wallet-sized certification cards from the Asbestos/Lead/Silica program. Moreover, each worker’s employment file will include their latest test records, while the training program will be mentioned in their training database.
