Are you confused about getting orthodontic treatment for your child? Read on to know the importance of pediatric orthodontic intervention.

Dubai, UAE – All smiles are beautiful. So why does society perceive straight teeth as more beautiful than crooked ones? One of the biggest reasons why we all consider straight teeth perfect is because it’s healthier. Correcting dental misalignments and getting straighter teeth is therefore not just for its aesthetic value.

“There are so many myths going around regarding orthodontic treatments, some of which are so bizarre!” says Dr. Yasmin Kottait, Dubai’s most celebrated pediatric dentist. “Ideally, orthodontic treatments should start right from childhood. Early intervention is undoubtedly the best way to ensure that your child’s teeth are erupting properly and in place.”

Myths regarding pediatric orthodontic treatments are nothing new. Most parents may have already come across at least some of these, which may have led them to delay getting treatment for their children. To help you make informed choices, Dr. Yasmin has kindly taken some time to bust these myths-

Myth #1: Getting a beautiful smile is the only goal you achieve with straighter teeth

Not true. While the aesthetics of your little one’s smile do improve after orthodontic treatment, it is not the only reason for you to consider it. The primary goal of the treatment is to ensure that your child’s teeth are in proper alignment. This helps them to have a good bite, better control over chewing, and ensures speech development on time. In short, orthodontic treatments give a healthier smile. Not to mention it helps the jaws optimum growth preventing lots of jaw joint problems later in adulthood.

Myth # 2: You don’t need to start your child’s orthodontic treatment until they are a teenager

False. While pop culture has regularly shown us, teenagers, with braces. This may not be the case for your child. Some children require early intervention between the ages of at or after the ages of 6 to 9 where their pediatric dentist or orthodontist evaluates the developing dentition and occlusion to provide assessment or treatment. Waiting until the age of 12 will cause your child to miss out on this window. So take your child for his or her regular dental appointments and get evaluated regularly. The first orthodontic assessment is advised at 6 years of age.

Myth #3: Orthodontic treatments are too painful
Not true. Over the years, orthodontics has changed so much that children have a few different alternatives to traditional braces. Today braces are made of softer yet sturdier wires and smaller brackets, which are lightweight and more comfortable in your child’s mouth. There are tooth-colored ceramic braces for children who are conscious of their smiles. Clear aligners are also a possible treatment option if recommended by your child’s orthodontist. Additionally, your child’s orthodontist will provide customized treatment for your child considering their age and other factors to ensure their safety and comfort.

Myth #4: Braces cause tooth decay
False: Wearing braces will not lead to tooth decay. Having said that, your child must be taught to brush and floss their teeth properly to avoid food particles getting stuck between the brackets and wires. Leaving your teeth unclean will lead to plaque buildup, cavities, and eventually tooth decay. So the best way to ensure that your child doesn’t develop tooth decay is by supervising their brushing routine and encouraging them to wash their mouth after every meal.

Myth #5: Since my child got early intervention, he will have straight teeth for life
Maybe. Getting orthodontic treatment at any point in time doesn’t necessarily give you straight teeth for life. In the case of children who completed orthodontic treatments, dentists recommend wearing a retainer 24/7 whether fixed or removable. Children are encouraged to wear this retainer indefinitely. Removable retainers are worn at night as teeth may shift over time.
