National Quotes' research has shown that car manufacturers' advanced safety systems, such as the forward-collision warning system and lane-departure system, are designed to prevent car collisions, saving drivers money on their auto insurance coverage premiums over time.

According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), some of the advance safety systems decrease auto accidents, while others increase insurance claims. Matt Moore, vice president of HLDI, reported, "So far, forward collision technology is reducing claims, particularly for damage to other vehicles, and adaptive headlights are having an even bigger impact that we had anticipated."

The forward collision warning feature is designed to alert the driver of a potential collision ahead, and some features include autonomous braking to allow the vehicle to stop itself in order to avoid a collision if necessary. The Acura and Mercedes’ PDL claims decreased by 14 percent, and the Volvo’s PDL claims decreased by 10 percent.

HLDI performed a study on the affect of adaptive headlights in PDL claims for the Acura, Mazda, Volvo, and Mercedes and discovered that insurance benefits increased more for the other vehicle damage than the collision claims for the insured vehicle. The study showed that the adaptive headlights decreased PDL claims by over 10 percent. Moore stated, "All four adaptive headlight systems we looked at show benefits for most insurance coverages."

On the other hand, HLDI’s study showed that the lane-departure warning feature actually increased the amount of accident claims. Moore explained, "It may be that drivers are getting too many false alarms, which could make them tune out the warnings or turn them off completely."

NationalQuotes reports that according to HLDI, the study was limited due to the newness of the advanced-safety systems, but within the confines of the study the HLDI noted that vehicles with forward-collision and adaptive headlights slightly decreased the number of auto insurance coverage claims reported to insurance agents compared to vehicles without the systems.

These advanced safety features allow policyholders to drive safer and qualify for safe driving discounts that insurance agents will provide. Insurance companies, such as Geico, offer up to 26 percent on discounts for drivers who have been accident-free for at least 5 years.
