Musician is an understatement when you are talking about Marcus Hunley. The saxophonist is a master at the art of music. For more than two decades, Marcus Hunley has accomplished much in his music career. From 1991 until 1994, Marcus Hunley was a part of the Texas All-State Band. In 1994, Marcus Hunley entered Michigan State University as the first recipient of the Dick Charles Endowed Scholarship in Saxophone Studies.

“Being the first recipient of the scholarship was amazing to me,” says Marcus Hunley. “That is when I knew I must have a special talent.”

While at Michigan State University, Marcus Hunley performed in the top jazz ensemble and the wind ensemble. Marcus Hunley also performed with several jazz combos and jazz bands that traveled around the state. But that is not all. Marcus Hunley also performed as a freelance musician playing in bands and musicals such as Sunset Boulevard and Ragtime.

“I had some of the greatest times performing while going to school,” says Marcus Hunley. “I felt very free.”
After graduating college, Marcus Hunley went on to start a successful teaching career. Marcus Hunley was the Associate Director of Bands for the Portland Public School District in Portland, Michigan from 2000 to 2001. Then Marcus Hunley came back to Texas to teach. Marcus Hunley was the Associate Director of Bands for the Richardson Independent School District until 2003. Marcus Hunley also taught music for the Plano, Frisco and McKinney Independent School Districts.

“Teaching was such a great experience for me,” says Marcus Hunley. “I love being able to pass on my knowledge to students who are really interested in music as much as I am.”

During his teaching career, Marcus Hunley’s ensembles consistently earned high marks in competitions at the Texas University Interscholastic League. Marcus Hunley continued to perform as a freelance musician while teaching in Texas. In his 13 years, Marcus Hunley taught award-winning band programs, mostly in the northern Texas area.

“I have worked with so many talented students,” says Marcus Hunley. “Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing passion for music in the eyes of the students.”
