As a snowboarding instructor, Eric T Hauglum is best-placed to advise beginners on tips to consider when participating in the sport.

As a skilled snowboarder, Eric T Hauglum often takes the time to mentor and instruct aspiring snowboarders. He started skiing at three years old and decided snowboarding was his passion at nine. Eric knows that to become a skilled snowboarder takes time, practice, and adherence to precautions. Snowboarding is an extreme sport, and some injuries suffered can take years to heal. However, the thrill of the sport, gliding down slopes at speed is one that is unmatched, says Eric.

As a snowboarding instructor, Eric’s work is to bring snowboarders up to speed on the basics of the sport, plus offer tips that are crucial to enjoying the sport, which he shares.

Keep fit
Many people don’t realize snowboarding is a physical sport, says Eric T Hauglum. Just like you would keep fit in order to participate in a game of baseball or basketball, for instance, snowboarding requires that you keep fit. Eric advises that one should spend some time in the gym to strengthen their core and leg muscles. Keeping these two major muscle groups strong helps maintain stability and speed.

Hydrate
Physical activity makes use of the body’s energy and water resources. Thus, it is important to keep hydrated at all times. Because snowboarding often takes place in a cold environment, it is often common thinking that the body will not require fluids. However, the body is getting an intense workout, and replenishing the body’s fluids is necessary.

As Eric T Hauglum notes, having a backpack that contains a hydration pack is a good way to stay hydrated. These packs will often have a hose and reservoir that you can drink out of, making it convenient.

Safety gear
A common injury for many snowboarders is a broken or fractured wrist. Such an injury often happens because they forget to wear wrist guards. Wrist guards absorb the impact of a fall and reduce the chances of getting a broken wrist.
Safety should be the main priority for snowboarders, says Eric T Hauglum. Some injuries suffered while falling can be easily prevented if one wears the right protective gear.
