Christian LeFer Regained a Love of Learning

Christian LeFer didn’t like traditional education as a youth, but was inspired in college.

When Christian LeFer was twenty-two years of age, he enrolled in County College of Morris to begin the coursework he would need for a Business major. It led to a relationship that changed his life forever.

Already, Christian LeFer had had a taste of the business world, and was savvy enough to understand he needed to further his education to obtain employment or run a business that had greater potential than what he had been involved with up to that time.

Christian LeFer had never been a traditional student: he could read well upon entering Kindergarten, and his test performance in all areas was far above grade level. At County College of Morris in New Jersey, Christian LeFer was lucky enough to meet Professor Dr. Melvyn G. Weissman, a renowned expert in Medieval Europe and Russian history. Dr. Weissman chose to teach at CCM instead of an Ivy League university, and showed Christian LeFer that instead of boring academics, learning could be an exciting and fulfilling journey.

Dr. Weissman’s brilliant lectures and methods opened up a new world for the young student, helping him overcome negative beliefs about classroom education left over from a public school system that never provided enough of a challenge to either hold his interest or maximize his potential. “I owe a huge debt to Dr. Weissman,” Christian LeFer says today. "From the first time he closed his eyes and transported me to ancient Mesopotamia with his description of life at the dawn of history, I was a changed person. It woke me up to the merits of higher-level education and moreover, a love of learning and imagination I thought I had lost in childhood.”

Christian LeFer became a very busy young man. He was the News Editor and pro-liberty conservative columnist for the school’s flagship daily news publication, the Youngtown Edition, executing roles of both a prolific hard news and human interest reporter and lively opinion writer. Not long after graduating with his Associates degree, he applied to Rutgers University, and was accepted into a History/Political Science joint major. He graduated Rutgers cum laude in 2001.

Today, following a long and successful career as a marketer, entrepreneur, and public policy consultant Christian LeFer is finding a way to make a difference in the lives of young people, not unlike the way that Dr. Weissman made a difference in his. He is an advocate of Foster Parenting, and is launching a nonprofit organization called The Foster and Adoptive Families Foundation help promote the issue. The foundation makes its official debut on June 1, 2014. Christian LeFer has set up a website for the foundation at Fosterandadopt.com.
