Commissioned by Shaldon Parish Council, the project was the result of a detailed design and consultation process throughout 2024, culminating in a bespoke play space tailored to suit the location’s natural charm and the needs of the local community.
One of the main reasons Rhino Play was chosen was their ability to offer playground equipment made from sustainable, saltwater-resistant materials such as recycled plastic and laminated Redwood. The council evaluated various materials - including Robinia and pine - but opted for Rhino Play’s recommended options after reviewing their long-term performance and low maintenance needs in similar environments.
Rhino Play’s in-house design team worked closely with the council, revising plans seven to eight times to ensure every aspect of the site was right for the target age groups and the coastal location. The final design includes a thoughtful blend of recycled plastic, timber, steel, and HDPE to provide strength, durability, and visual appeal.
Installed features include:
- A Woolston Green Play System in recycled plastic
- Trim Trail connecting areas, also in recycled plastic
- A Redwood Infant Play Boat on a raised mound with sea views
- Teen Springy See Saw & Rocker made from durable modern materials
- Coastal-themed Swings in powder-coated light blue steel
- Roofed Picnic Tables with game-topped surfaces
- Ball Chute, Roundabout, and more, built from steel and laminates
From groundworks to grand opening
Installation took place during early 2025, with Rhino Play’s experienced team working through challenging winter conditions. The site was carefully prepared with aggregate to prevent future flooding, and natural rubber mulch surfacing in green and brown tones was laid to create a safe, all-weather play surface.
To complement the equipment, the team collaborated with local contractors and residents to plant shrubs, trees, turf, and a willow dome, further enhancing the area's green space. The completed park passed its ROSPA inspection and opened ahead of schedule with a community celebration led by local artist and businesswoman Laura Wall.
Stuart Hunt, Head of Sales, Advice and Design at Rhino Play, said: “This was a truly special project for the local community of Shaldon. From the very first design meeting, we knew how important it was for the community to get this right, and it’s been a privilege to work so closely with the Parish Council to bring it to life.
“Our team battled some wild weather during the install, but seeing the finished park full of colour and character and knowing it’s built to last is a great feeling. We’re proud to have created a space where local children can play, imagine and grow for years to come.”
