Who is the Head of the Prevention and Protection Service
The introduction of the figure of the RSPP, which took place with the law 626 of 1994 in Italy, was a significant innovation and wanted to sensitize the employer, who is given the burden of identifying a figure who helps him to adopt continuous improvement actions aimed at increasing safety in the workplace: in fact, the head of the prevention and protection service is designated by the employer for his skills and abilities which must be adequate to the nature of the specific risks in the workplace. In some cases, the role may also be covered by the employer itself or by an external consultant qualified to cover this role.
The figure of the RSPP has numerous duties and obligations including:
the identification of risk factors, risk assessment and measures for the safety and health of the workplace;
the development of safety prevention and protection procedures;
the preparation of worker information and training programmes, again on the subject of safety.

The RSPP collaborates with the employer and with the RLS (workers' safety officer), elected by the workers, to ensure continuous improvement of safety in the company. This objective can be achieved provided that all safety figures are adequately trained and updated: training and constant updating are therefore the basis for the implementation of improvement plans on safety and for a continuous increase in the level of company well-being .
