The focus on the empowerment of nurses in health and nursing policy, and as nurse practitioners in all specialized areas has paved the way for entrepreneurship in nursing.

It is time for nursing professionals to think beyond the four walls of working as traditional direct care providers, as it is only one part of nursing care. The year 2020 was declared the ‘Year of Nurses’ by the World Health Organization. The focus on the empowerment of nurses in health and nursing policy, and as nurse practitioners in all specialized areas (specifically Midwifery Practitioner, Critical Care Practitioner, and many more) has paved the way for entrepreneurship in nursing.

Now the question arises; How can you create or become nurse entrepreneurs? The vision has to be to facilitate and prepare young nurses for become job providers, and not job seekers, in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. With education, practice, and experience, nurses can successfully launch their own businesses in various areas.

However, before starting a new venture, one needs to have a clear understanding of their business idea, target market, and potential competition. Also, they may need to have some business know-how and can take some business training programs if needed.

Some potential pathways for nurses toward entrepreneurship are:-

1. Home Health Care Agency: Nurses with experience in home health care can start their agency to provide services like nursing care, physical therapy, psychosocial support, and occupational therapy to patients and families.
2. Assessment and Management Services: This can be done in neighborhood communities and schools, on preventive and promotive health aspects, and first aid measures in minor ailments and emergencies
3. Health-Related App or Software: With tech skills or programming experience, they can develop a medical app or software that will help patients manage their health, or make it easier for healthcare professionals to communicate and access patient information.
4. Healthcare Consulting: Nurses with expertise in specific areas of healthcare, such as infection control, maternal health, or chronic disease management, can offer consulting services to healthcare professionals and organizations.
5. Health-Related Products: Nurses with an interest in design or engineering can create medical products like a new type of dressing or mobility device.
6. Telehealth Services: Those who have experience in telehealth can start their own virtual consultations, check-ins, and remote monitoring services for patients, caregivers, and families.
