Greater Hyderabad faces a rising concern with stray dogs frequently attacking and injuring residents, particularly children and the elderly. In a tragic incident just two days ago, a child succumbed to injuries from a stray dog attack in Jawahar Nagar. Dr. Sandeep Ghanta, Senior Internal Medicine at Star Hospital, emphasizes the necessity of prompt medical attention following any dog bite, whether from a stray or domestic pet.
Key Recommendations:
Mandatory Vaccination: Even for minor bites, vaccination is crucial.
Immediate Washing: Clean the wound immediately with Dettol or soap.
First Aid and TT Injection: Apply ointment and seek immediate medical attention.
Observation: Monitor the biting dog to determine if it remains alive.
Avoid Self-Healing Methods: Do not use turmeric, chili paste, or rely on natural remedies.
Vaccination Protocol:
- For normal bites, five doses of the anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) are required.
- In severe cases, an additional five doses are necessary.
- Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) should be administered in four doses.
Dr. Sandeep Ghanta, Senior Internal Medicine, Star Hospitals, One of the Best General Physicians Hyderabad warns of the dangers of neglecting an anti-rabies vaccine, noting the potential risk of disease. Government hospitals like Nallakunta Fever Hospital and Narayanaguda IPM provide free, essential medical services to dog bite victims. Last year alone, Nallakunta Fever Hospital vaccinated 28,511 people for dog bites. Regularly, Nallakunta Fever Hospital sees 50 to 75 dog bite cases, while Narayanaguda IPM receives up to 50 individuals seeking anti-rabies vaccines.
Residents are urged to take dog bites seriously and seek immediate medical attention to ensure proper treatment and vaccination, significantly reducing the risk of complications.
