‘My Name is Dad’ Shines a Light on Mental Illness, the Stigma of Suicide, and the Life of Survivors After the Suicide of a Loved One

August 11, 2021: Life can be stressful at times, but with the right help, at the right time, issues can be dealt with and lives can be saved. Unfortunately, sometimes, it’s too late. In ‘My Name is Dad’ by James Frank, the author gives the reader a glimpse of what life would be like after you’ve lost a child to suicide.

Suicide can happen to anyone, anywhere. This book brings out the awareness of the impact suicide has on family and friends. An absolute must-read for anyone who has been affected by suicide in some form or the other.

During the launch of the book, the author said, “Those who knew him know, but for those who didn’t know our son, our son was a gem – always prioritizing work. At school, he was a brilliant student, always on top of things. He was the perfect son. But that illusion shattered into a million pieces in 2017 when I opened the garage door and found that my son had hanged himself from the garage ceiling. It was only after his death, that we found out he was on anti-depressants that were prescribed by a local clinic, and their sheer lack of not taking responsibility or sharing this information with us. This is the real account of my son, his suicide and the days leading up to it, and the horrible aftermath which followed. It tells the story of the unfathomable grief, sorrow, and regret of a father as he tries to come to terms with the tragedy of losing a son, while being faced with questions, like, “Did you suspect something? “Did you see it coming? And “How can you not know your child was suffering?” along with a plethora of other questions that myself and my wife faced after our son’s suicide.”

‘My Name is Dad’ is about picking up the broken pieces of our lives after our son’s suicide. The book has been divided into four chapters; Picking up the broken pieces of our life, Coping with our new reality, We moved on, and Coping with our new reality. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and the beginning of acceptance. Readers get an up-close-and-personal account of how the author coped with all stages of grief after the loss of his son, and we are brought to the gentle realization of the profound pain, sorrow, regret, and sheer terror that no parent should have to go through - the death of a child.

He continued, “This is the real account of our ordeal after our son’s suicide; A must-read for every family who is going through the same grief or wants to help prevent the specter of suicide from knocking at their door and taking away their loved one. My book helps explain the many stages, experiences, loss, strength, overcoming, and moving forward after losing our son to suicide.”

The book gives you insights on warning signs that this could happen to you along with how you can cope, heal, understand and learn to live again after the tremendous loss of losing a loved one to suicide. The first couple of chapters are very graphic, descriptive, and heartbreaking; not easy to read for some, but worth reading to the end.

“Through my personal day-to-day life, I have tried to help myself and others move forward and ease the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. I only hope after reading this book, you will have a deeper understanding of suicide and the ripple effect it has on survivors. You will find answers to questions and the feelings you are and will be experiencing. I have also tried to explain the lack of medical practice and experts in the psychological field. Everyone knows the word and meaning of suicide, but it's simply just a common word until it happens in your family. I hope this helps anyone who is going through the same horrific experience, and that it helps prevent young people from putting out the brilliant light that shines within them.” He concluded.

Heartbreaking, consoling, and inspiring. This is a gut-wrenching true story that has been laid out sincerely with a purpose - to spread awareness, to help families identify possible red flags in the behavior of a young adult, child/sibling that could possibly lead to suicide, but, more importantly, to cope with the stigma that still surrounds suicide in our society. It is hard not to be humbled by the courage the author’s shown by laying bare all the emotions, struggles, and heartache they went through, and the inner demons he was facing after his son’s suicide. The book focuses on three main areas; Offering alternative choices to people that feel they need to end their lives, helping families that have lost a loved one to suicide, and alerting everyone else that feels suicide could never happen in their family. ‘My Name is Dad’ is unrepentant, inspiring and thought-provoking in its portrayal of the lives of those suicide victims leave behind, and the callousness of a system that’s dismissive of mental illness, suicide, and the trail of heartache that follows the loved ones that are left behind.
